The Best Time To Take Maternity Photos | Florida Photographer

Family, Family Session, Jacksonville, FL, Maternity Session

Documenting your pregnancy with maternity photos is a MUST in my opinion! I'm often asked how far along you should be on the date of your session. There is definitely a sweet spot that works best for taking maternity portraits. You want to be able to show off your bump but not worry about going into labor before your session! As a photographer, I tell my clients that I recommend scheduling their maternity session between 31-35 weeks pregnant. 37 weeks and beyond is considered full term so you are more likely to go into labor before your session. However, I usually don't suggest scheduling beyond 35 weeks because let's be honest, after 35 weeks you are exhausted. However, this is just a guideline and it's also up to your personal preference. Also, if you are pregnant with multiples I would suggest an even earlier date.

It is best to schedule your maternity portraits as soon as possible! You will want to secure a date for your session and find the photographer that is the best fit for you!

Make sure you do some preparation before your session! I always recommend:

  1. Choose the perfect dress or outfit and make comfort a priority! There are many outfits to choose from including beautiful flowy dresses or button down shirts and jeans.
  2. Decide who will be in your maternity session and let your photographer know. I love couples maternity sessions and family maternity sessions if you already have kids. This is also a great way to include the older siblings in all of the new baby excitement! Some mommas choose to do a maternity session by themselves. Some mommas include pets! It's completely up to you! My sessions include enough time to incorporate family portraits, couple portraits, and portraits of just the expecting momma.
  3. Bring water to your session and a snack. With my last pregnancy, I would easily get light headed and dizzy because of changes to my blood pressure. Having water and a snack within easy reach will help alleviate those symptoms.
  4. Bring any props you would like to include in your session. Blankets, sonogram, baby shoes, and baby clothes are some examples.
  5. Bring your makeup and hair bag with you in case you need a last minute touch up. This is especially important if your maternity session is taking place on the beach. Maternity portraits on the beach are my favorite to capture but the wind can be intense at times!
  6. Don't be afraid to show your photographer inspirational photos that you come across. They want you to love your portraits!

Now schedule your maternity session with a photographer you love and enjoy some amazing portraits that you will absolutely cherish over the years!

I loved capturing this family maternity session for the Rosette family! They are such a beautiful family and this is such an exciting time for them as a soon-to-be family of 4! The location was one of my favorite places, Camp Milton Historic Preserve in Jacksonville, FL.
