By Kristina Reinhardt — Photographer | Boy Mom x3 | Coffee Addict | Beach-Loving Local

As a Jacksonville-based photographer and mom of three busy boys, I know just how important it is to find fun, budget-friendly ways to make memories with your family. Whether you're new to the area or a longtime local, Jacksonville has so many beautiful, affordable spots that are perfect for a family day out—and some are even hidden gems!

Bonus tip? Don’t forget to bring your camera (or your phone!) because so many of these places are picture-perfect. And of course, if you want a pro behind the lens, I’d love to tag along for a family session!

Here are 10 affordable family adventures in Jacksonville, FL you’ll want to check out:

1. Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park

Located in Atlantic Beach, Hanna Park is one of my absolute favorite places. With a freshwater lake, shaded hiking trails, playgrounds, splash zone, and miles of pristine beach, it's an amazing all-in-one family adventure spot. Entry is just $5 per vehicle, and they offer a military discount—perfect for my fellow military families looking for an affordable, relaxing day out. There’s plenty of space for kids to run wild and free, making it a must-visit if you’re in the Jacksonville area.

📷 Photography Tip: The trees here filter light beautifully—perfect for dreamy, golden-hour shots!

2. Friendship Fountain & St. Johns River Park

Located in downtown Jax near the Museum of Science & History (MOSH), this spot is not only iconic but also fun for kids to explore. Walk along the Riverwalk, watch boats go by, and snap photos near the massive fountain.

📷 Photography Tip: The river view at sunset is stunning—perfect for family portraits or just cute sibling candids.

3. South Beach Park and Sunshine Playground

A local favorite in Jacksonville Beach, this park is heaven for kids! There’s a splash pad, huge playground, picnic spots, and beach access just across the road. It’s totally free and has plenty of shade for hot days.

📷 Photography Tip: Capture candid play moments—it’s those giggles and goofy faces that make memories.

4. Castaway Island Preserve

This quiet nature preserve off San Pablo Road is a hidden treasure. With peaceful trails, boardwalks through the marsh, and scenic views, it’s ideal for a relaxed outing. It’s also educational, with signs about local wildlife along the trails.

📷 Photography Tip: The boardwalks create natural leading lines that look amazing in photos!

5. Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens

Nature-loving families will adore this peaceful spot filled with trails, gardens, and small ponds. Admission is just $3 per person, and it’s perfect for a quiet afternoon surrounded by nature.

📷 Photography Tip: The golden light peeking through the trees here is magical for portraits.

6. Beach Day at Atlantic or Neptune Beach

You know I had to include the beach. It’s my happy place! Load up the kids, grab some snacks, and head to the shore. Parking is usually free or low-cost, and the fun is endless.

📷 Photography Tip: Sunrise sessions are stunning at the beach—but if you’re there for fun, snap those sandy, salty moments anyway!

7. Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens (Free Tuesdays!)

Did you know the Cummer offers free admission every Tuesday from 4–9 PM? It’s a great way to introduce kids to art and enjoy their gorgeous riverfront gardens.

📷 Photography Tip: The gardens are SO dreamy and elegant—perfect for a spontaneous mom-and-me photo op.

8. Tree Hill Nature Center

Affordable and educational! Tree Hill has interactive exhibits, farm animals, and wooded trails. It's a great spot for younger kids to explore and learn. Admission is typically under $5 per person.

📷 Photography Tip: Look for spots with dappled light for natural, soft images of your littles exploring.

9. Riverside Arts Market (Saturdays Only)

Held under the Fuller Warren Bridge, this weekly market has food trucks, live music, local vendors, and river views. It’s totally free to walk around, and there’s always something new to see!

📷 Photography Tip: Street-style photos are so fun here—grab some local treats and snap away.

10. Adventure Landing (Mini Golf Days)

While some attractions here can get pricey, mini golf is super affordable (especially during weekday specials). It’s a fun way to spend an afternoon with kids of all ages.

📷 Photography Tip: Capture their concentration faces mid-putt—those make for the cutest memories!

Bonus Tip from a Photographer (and Mom):

Keep your camera or phone charged and ready. Even if you don’t plan to do a full-on photo session, these little outings are where some of the best memories happen. Messy ice cream smiles, sandy toes, mid-hike hugs… they all deserve to be remembered.

And if you ever want someone else to handle the camera so you can be in the photos for once, I’d love to join you for a family lifestyle session at one of these awesome spots!

Let’s make memories together—one adventure at a time. 💛
