How to Plan a Beautiful, Budget-Friendly Wedding (That Still Feels Like a Dream)| Jacksonville, FL Wedding Photographer

Tips from a Jacksonville Wedding + Elopement Photographer Serving St. Augustine, Amelia Island, and Northeast Florida

Planning a wedding can feel overwhelming—especially when you're trying to keep things budget-friendly. But I’m here to tell you: you absolutely *can* have a heartfelt, stylish, and unforgettable wedding day without stretching your budget too thin. Over the years, I’ve photographed weddings of all shapes and sizes in Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Amelia Island, and all across Northeast Florida—from elegant venues with full coordination teams to backyard DIY weddings made special by family and friends. Every single one was beautiful!

Whether you’re planning a full celebration or a cozy elopement with your closest loved ones, I hope these ideas help you stay grounded, inspired, and confident in creating a day that reflects your story.

1. Keep Your Guest List Small and Don’t Be Afraid to Elope or Choose a Micro-Wedding

The size of your guest list is the #1 factor in your budget. Fewer guests means fewer meals, drinks, rentals, and tables. A couple I worked with in Amelia Island invited just 25 guests—they laughed, cried, danced, and remembered every moment with the people who mattered most.

Elopements aren’t just trendy—they’re freeing. A quiet ceremony on the beach in St. Augustine or under the oaks at a park in Jacksonville can be incredibly meaningful (and affordable). Focus on the vows, the emotions, and the experience.

2. Book a Weekday Wedding

Many venues offer discounted rates for Monday–Thursday weddings. Not only does this help your budget, but vendors tend to have more flexibility and availability during the week.

3. Buffet Over Sit-Down (But Read This First!)

Buffets often cost less than plated meals and allow for more flexibility. However, it’s easy for couples to get pulled into conversations and miss the food. Ask someone you trust to make a plate for you both and bring it to your table so you can take a quiet moment to enjoy your meal together.

4. Don’t Overthink the Decor

Use what you can find locally—think thrift stores, wedding resale groups, and coordinating (not matching) centerpieces. One of my favorite weddings used cupcakes as centerpieces, with each one displayed on upside-down wine glasses. The bride got them from Smallcakes Cupcakery & Creamery, and they were both decor and dessert!

5. Cupcakes > Big Cake

A tiered cake is beautiful, but it can come with unexpected costs—like the "per-slice cake-cutting fee" charged by some venues or caterers. Opting for cupcakes or a dessert table means no slicing fee, easier cleanup, and desserts that double as décor. Or consider a smaller cake for just the two of you plus cupcakes or other small desserts for guests.

6. Save Big on the Bar

Stick to wine, beer, or a signature cocktail instead of a full bar. Guests still have a great time, and you’ll keep more of your budget for what matters most.

7. Skip the Videographer (If You Must)

Truthfully? I’ve been married for over a decade, and we’ve watched our wedding video once. But my wedding photos? I see them every day. They hang in my home, live in my album, and I share them again and again. Several of my brides have told me the same.

8. Book a Photographer Who Offers an Engagement Session

Some Jacksonville wedding photographers (like me!) include an engagement session in the wedding package. Use those photos for your save-the-dates, wedding website, and social media! And to save even more, consider digital invites or free online wedding websites like Zola or The Knot.

9. Don’t Skip the Photographer (But Be Smart)

Your photos are what you’ll have forever. Do your research. Choose someone whose work you love and who feels trustworthy. Be cautious of “too good to be true” pricing. Sadly, I’ve heard stories of photographers ghosting brides or delivering disappointing galleries—and you can’t get those moments back.

Consider customizing your photography coverage. Not every couple wants full-day coverage, and that’s totally okay. If you’re not planning to have a grand farewell or don’t need getting-ready photos, consider a smaller wedding photography package focused just on the ceremony, portraits, and key moments. Every couple’s priorities are different, and I always encourage you to invest in coverage where it matters most to you. A shorter package doesn’t mean fewer memories—it just means they’re the right ones.

10. Let Go of Perfection

You won’t remember the exact napkin fold or the playlist order 10 years from now. What you will remember is the way your partner looked at you during your vows. The laughter of your best friends. The tears in your parent’s eyes. The connection. Your wedding doesn’t have to be over-the-top to be absolutely unforgettable.

Final Thoughts

Weddings in Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Amelia Island, or anywhere in Northeast Florida don’t have to be lavish to be stunning. With smart planning, a little creativity, and the right people around you, your day can be everything you dreamed of—and more.
