Our First Family Disney Trip: Magic, Memories & Toddler Tips from a Photographer Mom
Hi, I’m Kristina — a Jacksonville, FL-based photographer and mom of three little ones. I spend my days capturing real-life love stories, both at weddings and during family sessions, but this time, I got to be on the other side of the camera for something really special: our first family trip to Disney!
We took our 7-year-old and newly turned 3-year-old twins to Magic Kingdom, and it was everything I hoped for — magical, exhausting, emotional, and full of those tiny, fleeting moments you just want to bottle up forever. As a photographer and a mom, I went into the trip thinking about two things:
- How can I make this go as smoothly as possible with toddlers?
- How do I actually enjoy it and still capture sweet memories — even if I’m just using my phone?
So this post is part travel story, part tips for photographing your own adventures, and part encouragement for moms who just want to make the most of this stage of life — sticky hands, overtired meltdowns, and all.
Arrive Early for the Best Light, Fewer Crowds & Cooler Temps
Getting to the park early has so many perks. The morning light is soft and beautiful (perfect for quick family photos in front of the castle before the crowds show up), and the temperatures are much more comfortable — especially for little ones. You’ll avoid the midday heat, long lines, and tired toddler meltdowns. Bonus: early mornings often bring out that fresh Disney magic when everyone’s energy is still high and the park feels extra dreamy.
🎢 Tips for Visiting Disney with Toddlers
1. Lower the pressure, raise the joy.
We kept our expectations simple: have fun, follow the kids’ lead, and take breaks. Not everything will go according to plan, and that’s okay. Some of our favorite moments came during snack breaks or silly dances — not big rides.
2. Rides we loved with our 3 & 7-year-old:
- Dumbo (a huge hit with our toddlers)
- Mad Tea Party (Teacups) – Spinning, giggling, and just the right amount of dizzy fun! This was a favorite for the kids — and a great way to get some super joyful action shots.
- Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin (our 7-year-old’s favorite)
- The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (so sweet and immersive)
- If you can, use Genie+ or plan Lightning Lane selections early to avoid long lines during meltdown o’clock.
🥐 Dining at the Beast’s Castle — A Personal Dream
We had lunch at Be Our Guest, and as a fellow book nerd and Belle-lover, it was a dream come true. The atmosphere alone is worth it — stained glass, the grand ballroom, and the West Wing! Definitely make a reservation in advance — and consider this a great mid-day break in the air conditioning.
📸 Tips for Capturing Great Disney Photos (Even with Your Phone)
As a photographer, I couldn’t not share a few easy ways to get memorable images of your trip — no matter what camera you’re using.
1. Focus on the moment, not the pose.
Candid photos — like your child, hugging their favorite character, or sharing ice cream — will mean more to you in the years to come than perfectly posed shots.
2. Find the light.
Mornings and late afternoons have the prettiest soft light. Try to position your subject so the sun in behind them — and they won't be not squinting into it.
3. Get down to their level.
Especially with toddlers, crouch down so you’re at their eye level. It makes photos feel more personal and connected.
4. Let the background tell the story.
Disney is full of magical settings — use the castle, the teacups, or the snack carts as natural backdrops that add context to your memories.
5. Capture the chaos, too.
The tired faces, the stroller naps, the snack-smeared cheeks… those are part of the story. And as a photographer who captures real life for families, I promise — those moments are just as beautiful.
💛 A Note From One Mom to Another
If we’ve never met — I’m a family and wedding photographer based in Jacksonville, FL, and my heart is in capturing honest, joy-filled moments for families like yours. Whether you're planning a big milestone or just want updated portraits of your growing crew, I believe photos don't have to be perfect to be absolutely worth it.
So mama, take the photo. Hand someone your phone. Let them capture you in the frame, too. Because these days? They go by so fast. And one day, those slightly chaotic, sun-soaked Disney photos might just be your favorites.
