What to Wear for Spring Mini Sessions: Tips for Families & Couples in Jacksonville, FL

As your family photographer in Jacksonville, FL, I get one question more than any other: What should we wear for our family photos? I get it – coordinating outfits for your whole family can feel like a stressful task, especially with so many options out there. But don’t worry, I’m here to help make it easy, fun, and stress-free!

If you’re planning on booking a Spring mini session either at Hanna Park’s beautiful beach or the cozy Jax Mini Sessions Studio, I’ve got some tips to help you choose the perfect outfits for the occasion. Whether you’re capturing family photos, maternity shots, or a couples session, these tips will work for everyone!

Start with Mom’s Outfit

The easiest way to start is by choosing an outfit for mom. For spring family photos, I always recommend a dress for moms—floral dresses work wonderfully for these sessions and really complement the blossoming spring scenery. Dresses with light colors, such as blush, lavender, or soft blue, work beautifully at the beach or in the studio setting. You can also opt for a dress in a pattern that includes floral prints, which will add a bit of texture and visual interest to your photos.

Once you’ve picked out a dress for mom, use it as the foundation for the rest of the family’s outfits. If mom wears a blush-colored dress, you can build the rest of the family’s wardrobe around complementary or neutral tones. Dad might wear something simple like a white or light blue button-up shirt with khakis or jeans. For the kids, consider outfits in similar shades or patterns that will coordinate without being too “matchy.”

Keep It Light & Breezy for Spring

Spring sessions are all about lightness and softness. Opt for pastel hues, soft blues, blush pinks, and light greens, which reflect the season’s natural beauty. These colors blend beautifully with the spring flowers in bloom and the lush green landscapes, especially if you're at the beach or at the park. Flowing fabrics like linen or cotton will give you that effortless, breezy look that works so well with the outdoors, whether you’re near the beach or indoors in the studio.

Neutral Base for Dad and the Kids

For Dad, I usually recommend a neutral look—think khakis, light-colored chinos, or jeans paired with a solid-colored shirt or a subtle pattern. Neutral colors like tan, navy, or light gray work great, as they complement both mom’s dress and the natural surroundings without competing for attention.

For the kids, I suggest using colors from Mom’s dress to pull together their outfits. If Mom is wearing a floral pattern with shades of pink and blue, then you could dress the boys in soft blue shirts and tan pants, while the girls could wear dresses that either match or complement the colors in Mom’s floral dress.

Don’t Forget About Shoes!

When it comes to shoes, beach sessions are sometimes perfect for going barefoot, allowing your family to enjoy the natural, carefree vibe of the ocean. However, if you’re all on board with wearing shoes, that’s totally fine too! Leather sandals, espadrilles, or simple flats work great for the beach setting. In the studio, I suggest opting for neutral, simple shoes that won’t distract from your outfits. Avoid overly flashy or chunky footwear, as it can pull attention away from the people in the photos.

Comfortable & Confident

Above all, comfort is key! You don’t want your family to feel stiff or uncomfortable during the session. If you’re planning a spring shoot at the beach, make sure the kids have comfy shoes they can easily slip on and off. And remember, a relaxed family will always look better in photos than one that’s tense or uncomfortable. Choose pieces that everyone feels confident in, and the photos will naturally reflect that.

Spring photoshoots are the perfect way to capture memories as your family grows, and with the right outfits, you’ll feel as good as you look! So let’s embrace the beauty of the season and have fun with the process. After all, family photos should never feel like a chore—they should be a joyful experience!
