Puppy Love: 5 Tips for the Perfect Outdoor Session with Your New Pup

There’s nothing quite like the joy of bringing home a new puppy — especially one as adorable and energetic as a black lab! I had the sweetest sunrise session with a new pup and their family, and it was pure magic. The beach was quiet, the light was soft, and the puppy had the space to run, explore, and just be his playful self.

As a Jacksonville and St. Augustine outdoor photographer, I love sessions that feel relaxed, natural, and true to real life — wiggly tails, puppy kisses, and all. If you're planning to include your dog in your next session, here are five tips to help make the experience smooth and joyful:

1. Bring Dog Treats and a Favorite Toy

Treats are essential for encouraging good behavior and getting those perfect "look at the camera" moments. A favorite toy can also help grab your pup’s attention and add fun movement to your photos — especially during playful beach moments.

2. Have an Extra Set of Hands

Bringing a friend or family member to wrangle the pup when you want couples or family-only photos is a huge help. It lets us focus on capturing sweet moments of just you while someone else handles the leash and energy.

3. Stay Hydrated (Especially in Florida!)

Florida mornings heat up quickly, even at sunrise. Bring water and a portable dish to keep your dog cool and refreshed. We’ll take breaks when needed — no rush, just fun.

4. Prepare for Cuddles, Play, and Real Moments

Puppies are rarely still — and that’s okay! We'll lean into the fun, capturing authentic moments like belly rubs, sandy snuggles, and beach zoomies. These interactive shots are often the most meaningful and joyful.

5. Use the Photos for a Puppy Announcement!

A photo session is a perfect way to celebrate your newest family member. These images make adorable “new puppy” announcements, holiday cards, or sweet prints for your home.

Why sunrise?

The soft golden light, empty weekday beaches, and cooler temps make it the best time for a stress-free session — especially with a curious puppy who needs space to roam. And the calm, quiet environment helps everyone (including the dog!) feel more at ease.

Whether you're welcoming a new puppy or simply want to include your dog in a family session, I’d love to help capture this season. As a Jacksonville and St. Augustine photographer, I specialize in creating natural, outdoor portraits full of life and love — tails, sand, and all.
